About Search Engine Optimisation

It can be argued, convincingly, that no single invention since the automobile has changed the way we live more than the Internet. From business to dating to news to shopping, there is little that one cannot find online. But nowhere has its effect been felt more acutely than in the business world. These days it is all but assumed that any top company will have their own website.

However, what is not quite as clear cut is how to drive traffic or consumers to these websites. This is a method that often requires the services of trained professionals called web designers. It is the job of these individuals to improve a company’s online presence through a process called search engine optimisation (SEO).

It sounds much more complicated than it actually is. Basically, it is just a way for consumers to track done companies who can provide them with the appropriate products or services. For example, if you are looking for used cars in your area, you would visit your favourite search engine and type in "used cars" along with the name of your hometown. The search engine will then display a results page with a number of matching listings.

It is also a fact that each search engine assigns each website an SEO ranking, which lets them know where the website should appear on the results page. The higher the ranking, the closer the listing will be to the top of the page.

How can this ranking be improved? The quickest and most effective way to improve your SEO ranking is to include the appropriate keywords on your website. That means that if you are selling used cars in the UK, it is important to use keywords like "used" or "second-hand cars in the UK". This will let the search engine know that your website contains the right subject matter when anyone searches for used cars in the UK.

Another good tip is to optimise your site for common typos and misspelled words. Yes, we know, it isn’t professional. But the fact is that typos account for a considerable amount of keyword traffic on the web, so it never hurts to include one or two of them.

Of course, the danger here is overkill. You don’t want to post text that is replete with obvious spelling errors and intentional typos. That would be a turnoff to discerning shoppers. However, a well-placed, hard to spot typo or two may help to improve your search engine optimisation ranking.

The key is to optimise your site carefully, even strategically so that you might improve your SEO ranking while remaining professional. This is something you should be sure to discuss with the website designer. He should be able to succinctly explain several effective ways to improve your SEO ranking. If he cannot, perhaps you need a new website designer.
