The Importance of SEO to Website Design


The days when web design was a simple process that few business owners understood, obviously, trained professionals have many more tools at their disposal than they did a few years ago. But then the field is also far more competitive these days and designers are expected to come up with original ideas and presentations for each and every client.

It is also an unfortunate fact that an attractive website alone is no longer enough to capture customers. There is also a little thing called search engine optimisation (SEO). If you have never heard of it, SEO is essentially the method through which customers locate your website.

But don’t let the acronym fool you… the process is fairly simple. For purposes of our discussion, let’s just say that you are searching for motel reservations in a foreign city you plan to visit on business. After you have performed a basic search with your favourite search engine, the computer will display a results page. Since people naturally click the listings at the top of the page first, it is important for companies to improve their position. The process of getting listings to the top of the page is called SEO.

In fact, what companies are actually trying to do is to improve their SEO ranking. This ranking is based on a number of different factors, and it is typically the job of the web designer or web developer to help a company achieve a higher SEO ranking.

How do they do this? One of the easiest and more affordable ways to improve or obtain a high ranking is to post SEO articles with relevant keywords on your site. Since most search engines scour the web for similar keywords, the more focused and specific the content that appears on your site, the higher your SEO ranking. A word of caution: do not include too many keywords in each article. This is a practice that is commonly called keyword stuffing and many search engines will automatically dismiss your site as spam if you do it too often.
